Meet the TeamThe Pledge of Allegiance
Every morning in classrooms across America, students stand, face the flag, and say these words together. But where did they come from — and what do they mean?
A Man Named Francis Had an Idea
A long time ago — way back in 1892 — a man named Francis Bellamy sat down and wrote a short promise. He wanted every child in America, no matter where they came from, to have the same words to say about their country. He called it the Pledge of Allegiance.
Pledge means a promise. Allegiance means loyalty — like being a really good friend to something. So the Pledge of Allegiance is a promise to be a good friend to your country.
Over the years, a few words were added. In 1923, people added "of the United States of America" so everyone knew exactly which flag they meant. In 1954, the words "under God" were added too.
Today, the Pledge has 31 words. That's shorter than most sentences in a chapter book — but it carries a very big meaning.
When you say the Pledge, you stand up straight, put your right hand over your heart, and face the flag. It is a way of saying: I see you, flag. I see what you stand for. And I am part of this country too.
The Pledge of Allegiance
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
Written by Francis Bellamy, 1892 · 31 words · recited in classrooms every school day

A Word from the Dean
Grammar College grew out of years of tutoring ESL students one-on-one and watching the same barriers appear again and again: expensive textbooks, inaccessible tutors, and a curriculum that treated grammar as a set of rules to memorize rather than a living system to explore.
We built this platform to tear those barriers down. Every lesson, every exercise, every tutor connection is designed to make the learner feel capable — because they are.
